Kopin Unveils New GaN Contact for Blue LEDs

TAUNTON, Mass., Nov. 25 -- Kopin Corp. has unveiled an ohmic contact technology on gallium nitride that exhibits low contact resistance and a high degree of stability. Kopin said this is the first time an epitaxial contact has been formed on GaN. The contacts are formed by depositing layers consisting of gold, nickel and gold on the P-type GaN surface and annealing in air for 30 minutes at 470 °C.

The company said the new contacts, combined with other improvements, have enabled it to produce blue LED chips as bright as those commercially available but that require much lower drive voltage.

"There's a lot of innovative science behind our bright little light," said John C.C. Fan, president and CEO of Kopin. "The initial reaction from our potential customers is excellent, and we are making very good progress toward the goal of mass production. We didn't start the coming LED lighting revolution, but we intend to accelerate it significantly."
