Michael M. Mielke of the University of Central Florida (UCF) is the winner of the 2003 OSA New Focus Student Award sponsored by the The Optical Society of America (OSA) and New Focus Inc., for his achievements in semiconductor laser research. Mielke was also the recipient of the National Science Foundation-sponsored graduate traineeship in optical science and engineering and UCF's School of Optics Student of the Year award, and was a finalist in the Collegiate Inventors Competition for the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He has developed a technique for mode partition noise in modelocked, multiwavelength semiconductors for which he has a pending US patent. Mielke has also established the simultaneous emission of 168 wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels from a single semiconductor laser and demonstrated a hybrid OTDM-WDM 50-Gb/s, 500-meter optical link using a modelocked, multiwavelength semiconductor laser and multimode fiber.   . . .   The NanoBusiness Alliance (NbA) announced it will lead a delegation in what it calls the first US nanotechnology trade mission to Europe Sept. 3-11. Led by NbA co-founder and Executive Vice President Nathan Tinker, the tour will make stops in Munich and Zurich before joining the NanoFair 2003 nanotechnology trade show and exhibition, being held Sept. 9-11 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. A limited number of delegation seats are still available. For more information, contact Tinker at [email protected]; phone: 203-854-0509.   . . .   Pittsburgh, Pa.-based Aerotech, which makes items such as linear motors for the motion industry, is offering a 32-page product brochure for engineers/designers who develop motion control and positioning solutions for laser processing, medical device manufacturing and life sciences equipment.
