EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Nov. 4 -- OmniCorder Technologies has been selected by the US Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to develop novel sensor technology. OmniCorder will develop a multiband high-resolution, quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) to be used for missile defense and medical imaging applications. The company said it will collaborate with a team of research and devlopment institutions in the field, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Army Research Laboratory and the Goddard Space Flight Center. OmniVision said its mission is to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare services and research by identifying, acquiring and adapting military and aerospace technology for biomedical applications. It said the new infrared sensor is expected to make new medical imaging applications possible and to have a substantial impact on the fields of functional and molecular imaging. OmniCorder, based in Setauket, N.Y., makes the BioScanIR system, which detects diseases that affect changes in blood perfusion by detecting minute changes in the pattern of infrared photon emissions over time. The system uses QWIP sensor technology, which was originally designed to be used in the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"). OmniCorder Technologies has obtained exclusive rights to this technology. Mark A.
