Free-Electron Laser Achieves 10 kW in the Infrared

Scientists at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Va., have produced 10 kW of tunable infrared radiation from their free-electron laser. The laser is of interest to the US Navy for potential shipboard directed-energy defense systems and to researchers for use in the investigation of phenomena in the physical and biological sciences.     A free-electron laser (FEL) is a type of laser that generates coherent, high-intensity electromagnetic radiation by using a beam of accelerated electrons as the lasing medium.
