Corning Breaks Ground at LCD Site

CORNING, N.Y., Sept. 16 -- Corning Inc. is hosting a ceremony today at the site of its new liquid crystal display (LCD) glass substrate manufacturing facility at the Central Taiwan Science Park in Taichung, Taiwan, marking the beginning of construction of its second Taiwan facility. This new operation -- Corning Display Technologies Taiwan Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Corning Inc. -- is expected to begin manufacturing in Taichung during the third quarter of 2005, with additional capacity to come online through 2006.     liquid crystal display
    An alphanumeric display formed by a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between two sheets of glass; a transparent conductive coating on the glass is etched to form the character segments. An applied voltage causes the appropriate segments to darken as the molecules in the liquid crystal change their arrangement.
