PORTLAND, Ore., April 19 --Flir Systems Inc. announced today it has received a contract worth approximately $13 million to develop an advanced stabilized electro-optical infrared (IR) system for use on lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), from the US Army Research Development & Engineering Command, Communications-Electronics Research Development and Engineering Center, Night Vision & Electronic Sensors Directorate.

The contract calls for a purpose-built, very small and lightweight stabilized thermal imaging system with long-range performance, color-visible imaging and advanced laser capabilities. Work will begin immediately at Flir's Billerica, Mass., facility and will take three years, Flir said.

The company makes IR imaging systems for applications in public safety, defense, navigation, electronic newsgathering and search and rescue.
