‘Nano3 Photonics’ Demonstrated with Single Gallium Nanoparticle

Anne L. Fischer

Photonic devices are coming in smaller and smaller packages, giving rise to a demand for nanoscale components. To that end, investigators at the University of Southampton in the UK are working on an approach to be used in nanoscale nonlinear optical devices and have achieved what they believe is the first demonstration of the efficient modulation of light with light in a single nanoparticle. They grew the metallic nanoparticle at the tip of a tapered silica glass optical fiber with a nanoaperture of about 100 nm at its end by placing the fiber in a vacuum chamber, cooling it to about 80 K...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
