- Nichols Elected to CLEO/QELS Advisory Committee
Jeff Nichols, regional sales manager for Pittsfield, Mass.-based Laurin Publishing Co., has been elected as exhibitor representative to the advisory committee of the Optical Society of America's CLEO/QELS (the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics/International Quantum Electronics), the most highly regarded conference in the fields of lasers and electro-optics. Nichols was elected to a four-year term and will be involved in developing future CLEO/QELS exhibitions. He has worked for Laurin Publishing for seven years and lives in Pittsfield with his two sons. CLEO/QELS is the global scientific community's event of choice for presenting the latest optics and photonics research and findings, where more than a thousand of the world's foremost experts submit their works for presentation each year. Laurin Publishing produces www.photonics.com and the monthly photonics industry magazines Photonics Spectra and Biophotonics International and the bimonthly EuroPhotonics, as well as the international photonics buyers' guide and reference source the Photonics Directory.
- 1. The branch of physics that deals with the use of electrical energy to create or manipulate light waves, generally by changing the refractive index of a light-propagating material;
2. Collectively, the devices used to affect the intersection of electrical energy and light.
Compare with optoelectronics.
- The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
