Scientists Unveil 'Nanoegg'

HOUSTON, Texas, July 25, 2006 -- The nanoegg, the latest in a line of man-made, ultrasmall light-focusing particles, is 20 times smaller than a red blood cell like its cousin, the nanoshell, but can interact with five times as much light. Its creators said the nanoeggs' optical properties can be harnessed for molecular imaging, medical diagnostics, chemical sensing and more. The nanoegg was created by researchers at Rice University's Laboratory for Nanophotonics (LANP). Like the lab's nanoshells, nanoeggs are ultrasmall and can be tuned to focus light on small regions of space. But each nanoegg interacts with more light...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
    plasmon
Calculated quantity of the entire longitudinal wave of a solid substance's electron gas.
