Biotech Startup Granted $1.65M for 'Molecular Beacon'

ATLANTA, July 31, 2006 -- A company co-founded by a Georgia Institute of Technology researcher has received a $1.65 million federal grant to develop and commercialize a nanoscale sensor called a “molecular beacon” for the detection and diagnosis of diseases including cancer. A molecular beacon is a hairpin oligonucleotide (a short sequence of RNA or DNA nucleotides)  probe that fluoresces upon binding to a target RNA molecule.     beacon
    A device, either visual or electronic, that emits signals to identify set positions for use in the navigation of aircraft and ships along flight paths and channels, or as a warning against entering a hazardous area.

    probe
    Acronym for profile resolution obtained by excitation. In its simplest form, probe involves the overlap of two counter-propagating laser pulses of appropriate wavelength, such that one pulse selectively populates a given excited state of the species of interest while the other measures the increase in absorption due to the increase in the degree of excitation.
