Sandia, Monsanto Sign Cooperative Research Agreement

Sandia National Laboratories of Livermore, Calif., which provides research and development for the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, and St. Louis-based agricultural product developer Monsanto Co. announced a three-year biology and bioenergy research collaboration. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The research, which falls under a five-year "umbrella" cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA), will initially focus on hyperspectral fluorescence imaging and spectral analysis. The technology will be used  to help Monsanto study...Read full article

    Glossary
    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
    hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...
    microscopic
Characteristic of an object so small in size or so fine in structure that it cannot be seen by the unaided eye. A microscopic object may be rendered visible when examined under a microscope.
    scanning
The successive analysis or synthesizing of the light values or other similar characteristics of the components of a picture area, following a given method.
    spectrum
    See optical spectrum; visible spectrum.
