G-S Plastic Optics Opens In-House Coating Facility

G-S Plastic Optics (G-SPO) of Rochester, N.Y., announces the completion of its most recent plant expansion through the establishment of an in-house coating facility with technology specific to polymer substrates. In April, the company integrated a precision optical coating system, built by Vacuum Process Technology Inc., that includes e-beam and resistive evaporation with plasma ion assist to form low stress, dense and durable coatings that meet the thin-film requirements of polymer optics. The facility has in-house metrology, including reflection and transmission measurement capability on both PerkinElmer Lambda 650 and Lambda 10 UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers and other film characterization resources. G-SPO said it will focus on providing vacuum-deposited coatings on polymer substrates such as PMMA, styrene, polycarbonate, Zeonex, Zeonor and Topas.

Glossary
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
polycarbonate
A tough, durable, heat- and cold-resistant optical quality plastic used in injection-molded items such as streetlight lenses, automotive taillights and audio compact discs.
polymer
Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. These monomers are chemically bonded together to form long chains or networks, creating a macromolecular structure. The process of linking monomers together is known as polymerization. Polymers can be classified into several categories based on their structure, properties, and mode of synthesis. Some common types of polymers include: Synthetic polymers: These are human-made polymers produced through...
spectrophotometer
A spectrophotometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the intensity of light at various wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the visible and ultraviolet regions. It is commonly employed in various fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science for a wide range of applications, including chemical analysis, color measurement, and concentration determination of substances in a solution. Spectrophotometers operate by passing a beam of light...
