Team Detects Top Quark

RIVERSIDE, Calif., Dec. 15, 2006 -- A group of 50 international physicists has detected the subatomic particle the top quark, for the first time produced without the simultaneous production of its antimatter partner -- an extremely rare event. The discovery of the single top quark could help scientists better explain how the universe works and how objects acquire their mass, assisting human understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe. The heaviest known elementary particle, the top quark has the same mass as a gold atom and is one of the fundamental building blocks of nature. Understood to be an ingredient of...Read full article

    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
