Arima Optoelectronics Claims LED Patent Infringement

LED supplier Arima Optoelectronics Corp. of Taoyuan, Taiwan, announced yesterday that "quite a few" major LED makers may have infringed its patent (no. 171221) concerning the process to create a mixture of phosphor and scattering optical media. The patent claims that a scattering optical media with a bandgap larger than 3 eV can improve the color quality of white LEDs. "Arima Opto will take serious consideration and action to protect its intellectual property and vigorously enforce its intellectual property rights," said Senior Manager Yung Hui Chuang in a statement.

Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
phosphor
A chemical substance that exhibits fluorescence when excited by ultraviolet radiation, x-rays or an electron beam. The amount of visible light is proportional to the amount of excitation energy. If the fluorescence decays slowly after the exciting source is removed, the substance is said to be phosphorescent.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
scattering
Change of the spatial distribution of a beam of radiation when it interacts with a surface or a heterogeneous medium, in which process there is no change of wavelength of the radiation.
