A group of Iowa State University researchers has successfully demonstrated a photonic bandgap filter that can operate in the far-IR region of the spectrum. According to Gary Tuttle, who is an electrical and computer engineering professor at the university, the filter will give astronomers more of the desired light while rejecting unwanted light. Although other filters have similar capabilities, the new filters could prove less expensive. They could be used for several applications, including certain microwave devices, cell phones, radar antennas, global positioning systems and high-efficiency...Read full articleRelated content from Photonics MediaArticlesInspection Technology Incorporates AI to Detect Defects in Real TimeResearchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS (Fraunhofer IWS) have developed a solution that uses AI and optical measurement technology to detect, classify, and...Photonics Spectra August 2023 IssueTerahertz Light Experiments Herald Downsized Particle AcceleratorsScientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) investigating how to produce and use terahertz (THz) light to enable particle accelerators developed an electro-optical sampling technique that...Photonics.com 7/25/2022Fiber Oscillator Extends Femtosecond Lasing to VIS-Based ApplicationsFemtosecond (fs) fiber oscillators are a standard technology used to generate fs laser pulses.
