Pacer USA LLC Opens Optoelectronics Design Center

Pacer USA LLC has launched a North American optoelectronics design center at its Pennsylvania facility, offering services for LED, laser and sensor products. James Woodhead will head the new center. "Customers appreciate local support for design, prototyping and test, but they demand the cost savings of global production facilities," he said. Pacer's team performs design services for optics, emitters and sensors and signal conditioning such as multiplexing, amplification and interfacing. Microcontroller programming and the mechanical design of moldings, housings and connector and cable...Read full article

    Glossary
    multiplexing
The combination of two or more signals for transmission along a single wire, path or carrier. In most optical communication systems this is referred to as wavelength division multiplexing, in which the combination of different signals for transmission are imbedded in multiple wavelengths over a single optical channel. The optical channel is a fiber optic cable or any other standard optical waveguide.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
