Aculight Hires Senior Scientists

Hu&Redmond.jpgLaser maker Aculight Corp. of Bothell, Wash., announced it has hired two senior scientists: Shawn Redmond specializes in high-power laser technology and Dan Hu will also support the company's line of high-power fiber laser modules as a project manager. Redmond joins Aculight from Northrop Grumman, where he was a staff engineer specializing in multi-kW solid-state lasers. He has also been a research assistant at the University of Michigan and at Oregon State University. Redmond earned several Northrop Grumman awards and the SPIE Educational Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD and an MS in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and has been published in numerous journals, including Optics Letters, the Journal of Applied Physics and the Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Prior to joining Aculight, Hu was a senior optical engineer/project manager for Spectra Physics, where he was responsible for diode laser technology and product development. He has also been a senior optical engineer for NP Photonics and a senior engineer for Ciena Corp. He holds a PhD and an MS in optical sciences from the University of Arizona and has earned three patents with another four pending. Hu has been published in several journals, including Electronics Letters, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters and Science.



GLOSSARY
fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
