MRI Finds Brain Marker

OAK BROOK, Ill., Sept. 25, 2007 -- A new marker that may aid in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease has been found through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). "The findings of this study implicate a potential functional, rather than structural, brain marker -- separate from atrophy -- that may help enhance diagnosis and treatment monitoring of Alzheimer's patients," said Jeffrey R. Petrella, MD, associate professor of radiology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.  and the lead author of a paper on the research. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder characterized by...Read full article

    magnetic resonance imaging
An imaging technique used in radiology that is based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to produce high-quality images of the inside of the human body by imaging the nuclei of atoms within the body.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
