Curtiss-Wright Awarded Laser Peen Contract

Curtiss-Wright Corp. of Roseland, N.J., a manufacturer of products for motion control and flow control applications, announced today that its Metal Treatment segment has been awarded a contract from The Boeing Co. to establish a laser-peen-forming production cell inside Boeing's Frederickson, Wash., facility. The cell is planned to be in production during the second quarter of 2008 and would initially be used for shaping the complex curvatures of some wing sections of the new Boeing 747-8. Curtiss-Wright's laser peening process is based on neodymium glass laser technology originally developed...Read full article

    Glossary
    glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
    laser peening
Laser peening is a surface enhancement technique used to improve the mechanical properties of materials, particularly metals. It involves the use of high-energy laser pulses to generate shockwaves on the surface of a material. These shockwaves induce compressive residual stresses in the material, providing enhanced strength and fatigue resistance. The process of laser peening typically involves the following steps: Laser pulse generation: High-energy laser pulses are generated, usually...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
