ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Jan. 29, 2008 -- CVI Melles Griot has introduced four new laser cartridge components: a blue 488-nm solid-state laser for bioanalytical applications; an ultracompact diode laser half the size of previous versions; a yellow solid-state laser for fluorescence applications; and a universal controller for both diode and DPSS (diode-pumped solid-state) lasers. The company displayed the new products last week at Photonics West 2008 in San Jose, Calif.

CVI Melles Griot said its new 85-BBB series blue solid-state laser has a new controller format. The product provides up to 30 mW of output at 488 nm, with the highest electrical to optical efficiency available in the wavelength range. The laser is now offered with the new CLC compact, universal OEM controller which also drives the new ultracompact CRH diode lasers with the same common command sets. This new controller format makes these products easy to integrate into any system or instrument, according to the company.

The 85-BBB series can be used as a direct replacement for air-cooled argon-ion lasers in bioanalytical, medical, and metrology applications. With a total power consumption of less than 20 W, thermal management is dramatically simplified and operating lifetime is measurably increased, according to CVI Melles Griot.

"The system, comprising a small laser head footprint, a universal controller for maximum flexibility and an RS-232 interface, delivers exceptional performance for a compact OEM solution. The product is also available with single-mode fiber beam delivery," said Lisa Tsufura, laser marketing manager.

The new 56-CRH series ultracompact laser head represents a 50 percent reduction in footprint over previous versions, CVI Melles Griot said. It also features a pointing stability two times better than currently available in the industry, a true “off” in modulation, and is compatible with the new 56-CLC universal controller.

The rectangular package, at 3.5 x 1.6 x 1.6 in. (90 x 40 x 40 mm) contains a semiconductor laser, thermal management system, and beam conditioning optics.

The 56-CRH series provides excellent output power and pointing stability at 408, 442, 642 and 658 nm, the company said. In addition to the highest standards in optical noise, power stability and pointing stability, the products offer digital modulation with rise/fall times to <200 nanoseconds; analog modulation is also available. Custom wavelengths, output power, spot dimensions and electronic drive configurations are available on request.

“We are very excited about the release of these products to the general marketplace. The true ‘off’ in modulation is ideal for long duration exposure applications where noise is a factor. Their small footprint and versatile system integration possibilities make the 56 CRH-series lasers ideal for inclusion in OEM systems for biotech, metrology, and research applications,” said Lynn Strickland, vice president of laser business development.

The new 85-YBB is a compact yellow solid-state laser head for fluorescence applications. The laser is now offered with the new CLC compact and universal OEM controller which also drives the new mini CRH diode lasers with the same common command sets, the company said. This new compact and common format makes these products easy to integrate into any system or instrument. The products provide up to 25 mW of output at 561 nm, with stability over a wide operating temperature range.

The 85-YBB series offers a wavelength that is ideally suited for Rhodamine, ROX, and Alexa Fluor dyes and as a highly reliable drop-in replacement for krypton-argon and many green wavelength lasers, CVI Melles Griot said. The excellent beam quality, narrow linewidth, and low optical noise make the products ideal for flow cytometry, scanning, microscopy, metrology and spectroscopy.

56-CLC series is a universal laser controller for multiple laser line applications. Able to operate the company’s CRH-series diode laser modules at 408, 442, 642 and 658 nm, the controller also operates diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers at key wavelengths such as 488 and 561 nm.

The unique design of the controller reduces system complexity and cost by using drive electronics with a common software interface and 5-Vdc power input. The same model power supply may be used to operate multiple, interchangeable laser diode laser or DPSS laser heads. Both OEM controller board and CDRH enclosure versions are available, the company said.

“The small footprint and versatile system integration of the universal controller are unique in the marketplace. The result is ultracompact and standardized laser drive electronics which can be controlled through a common command set. This is particularly beneficial for customers who integrate multiple lasers into a single platform or instrument,” Strickland said.

CVI Melles Griot also said it is now offering two-week turnaround on its high-energy-laser optic coatings.
