Hardenburg.jpgRigaku Americas Corp. of The Woodlands, Texas, announced today that Wes Hardenburg, its CFO since 2000, has been promoted to serve as its president and CEO. Hardenburg succeeds Paul Swepston, PhD, who will continue on as senior advisor to the CEO of parent company Rigaku Corp. in Tokyo. Hardenburg joined Rigaku through the acquisition of Osmic Inc. in 1999. Rigaku makes analytical and industrial instrumentation used in small molecule and protein crystallography, x-ray spectrometry and diffraction, x-ray optics, and semiconductor metrology.

GLOSSARY
crystallography
The analysis of the atomic structures within crystals by means of x-ray diffraction.
diffraction
As a wavefront of light passes by an opaque edge or through an opening, secondary weaker wavefronts are generated, apparently originating at that edge. These secondary wavefronts will interfere with the primary wavefront as well as with each other to form various diffraction patterns.
metrology
The science of measurement, particularly of lengths and angles.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
spectrometry
The study and measurement of spectra and their components.
