Harnessing phosphorescence for a brighter, longer-lasting glow

From detecting biological weapons to diagnosing disease to environmental monitoring, fluorescence has been used for all kinds of tests. However, sometimes it’s difficult to discriminate the fluorescent dye from cells and tissues that also fluoresce. Measuring how long the fluorescence lasts is one way to overcome this, but not many dyes have clearly distinguishable fluorescence lifetimes, so researchers at Kimberly-Clark Worldwide Inc. in Roswell, Ga., are working with phosphorescent particles instead. Encapsulating these phosphorescent particles keeps them oxygen-free, so that their...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
