Radio Harvests Energy

MANHATTAN, Kan., Dec. 18, 2008 – If changing the batteries in the remote control or smoke detector seems like a chore, imagine having to change hundreds of batteries in sensors scattered across a busy bridge. That's why Kansas State University engineers are helping a semiconductor manufacturer implement its idea of an energy-harvesting radio. It could transmit important data – for example, stress measurements on a bridge – without needing a change of batteries, ever. An in-progress demonstration board of an energy-harvesting radio developed at Kansas State University. The finished board includes solar cells to power the...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
