The Universe Used as a Lens

CHICAGO, Feb. 25, 2009 – Scientists are harnessing the cosmos as a scientific “instrument” in their quest to determine the makeup of the universe. The University of Chicago’s Evalyn Gates calls the instrument “Einstein’s telescope.” The instrument is actually the phenomenon of gravitational lensing, which acts as a sort of natural telescope. Gates’ new book, “Einstein's Telescope: The Hunt for Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the Universe,” explains how it works. (See a video of Gates explaining gravitational lensing here.)  Galaxies can warp space and time, distorting our view of distant objects, much the way...Read full article

    Glossary
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    quantum mechanics
The science of all complex elements of atomic and molecular spectra, and the interaction of radiation and matter.
    telescope
An afocal optical device made up of lenses or mirrors, usually with a magnification greater than unity, that renders distant objects more distinct, by enlarging their images on the retina.
    tomography
Technique that defocuses activity from surrounding planes by means of the relative motions at the point of interest.
