Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., have been awarded a 2009 US Department of Energy INCITE (Innovative and Novel Computational Impact of Theory and Experiment) award to further their research into how diseases penetrate the lipid bilayers that protect human cells. The award provides the scientists with 1 million processor hours, or the equivalent of 114 years if run consecutively, on the Cray XT machines at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, to produce high-fidelity simulations of complex biological membranes.
