The SL720 features a 28-mm wide-angle lens, while the SL502 offers a standard 35-mm lens. Both provide image stabilization to help reduce the blur caused by hand movements. The SL720 offers dual image stabilization, which combines optical and digital technology; the SL502 features digital image stabilization. Users can frame their shots and review their images on the cameras’ large LCD screens. The SL720’s measures 3.0 in. and the SL502’s is 2.7 in.

Both incorporate intuitive and smart features that simplify how users take and view their photos. They include a proprietary “smart auto” shooting mode that automatically chooses from one of the cameras’ 11 scene modes to produce the best possible image. The “smart album” tool allows users to search for a specific image they have saved on their memory card. Smart album automatically organizes the digital images and lets users narrow their search based on specific criteria such as the date or week the image was taken, the overall color tone, and portraits or specific file types, including photos, videos, and voice memos.

The cameras feature face recognition technology that automatically stores up to 20 preferred faces to internal memory. While taking a portrait, the cameras automatically recognize if one of the user’s 20 preferred faces is in the frame, and they identify it as a priority for focus and exposure. Users can save time sorting through their photos and instead search for ones that contain a particular face. The “perfect portrait” system includes face detection, smile shot, blink detection and the proprietary “beauty shot.”

The SL720 can record 720-pixel high-definition (HD) video which can be played on an HD television through an optional HD multimedia interface cradle sold separately. The camera also uses H.264 compression, an advanced codec that allows users to record video for longer periods of time. The SL502 features high-quality mjpeg video recording at 640 × 480-pixel resolution. The cameras’ 5× optical zoom can be used while recording video.

The SL720 measures 96.3 × 59.5 × 23.9 mm, and the SL502, 97 × 59 × 24.5 mm.
