  • LED TVs Add More Colour to Indian Consumer Market

Aug. 31, 2009 — Friends, in my previous post, I discussed about the growing LED market in India. Taking the conversation forward, I would like to draw your attention toward the still-booming Indian television market, where LED TVs have now started to create a buzz!

Though very expensive, LED TVs are starting to score over the LCD/plasma TVs among Indian consumers. Here again, as I previously said, you'd probably say – what's the big deal about all this?

Let me tell you that consumer electronics is a very huge, growing market in India, and the entry of LED TVs, like in any other market in the world, will see it achieve another milestone in the evolution of TV.

Electronics majors like Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Sony, etc., have placed their foot firm in competing among each other in the Indian LED TV market. Electronics giant Samsung India has been adding more LED TVs to its portfolio by launching a premium line-up of LED HDTV in India, including selected models of 7000 and 6000 series. The stylish looks and broad screen have been wooing every cash-rich Indian consumer.

The ultrahigh contrast ratios and energy efficiency offered by LED TVs as against the use of traditional CCFL has captured many eyes. The wide screen, sharp picture quality, sleek design are irresistible for an avid Indian TV viewer.

In spite of high price range of LED TVs, my guess -- around US $6,000, which is 30 to 40 percent more than LCD TVs, the premium series of LED TVs, which support USB and HDMI ports, has created more excitement among consumers. These eco-friendly, mercury-free, lead-free and energy-efficient TVs are contributing to the increase in sale volumes of flat-panel TVs in India.

You will also be surprised to hear that retailers in India leave no stone unturned to woo the customers by offering huge discounts and freebies on these products. Since LED products are expensive, annual discount sales and sales during the religious and national festivals are the best time for such expensive buys.

Many top electronic companies are targeting the product for commercial use as an outdoor media by customising the products to suit the needs off the Indian market. This is proof enough for global electronic companies to turn toward India in building a strong market for LED TVs.

This should also be interesting enough for LED TV manufacturers of lesser known brands to enter India by offering the same product at a lower cost! And well, more good news for LED makers! What say?
