LEDs: Beyond High Brightness

Rick Zarr, National Semiconductor Corp.

The US Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported in 2007 that the US had used roughly 526 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for lighting (both commercial and residential). In 2008, the EIA reported that a typical American nuclear power plant produced roughly 12.4 billion kilowatt-hours. Simple math shows that the lighting needs of the US alone require roughly the equivalent of more than 42 nuclear power plants. As the global population has continued to grow, the lighting industry has pursued new light sources with higher efficiencies to reduce the energy...Read full article

    Glossary
    entrainment
The movement of particulate material by flowing gas or liquid.
    heat sink
A series of flanges or other conducting surfaces, usually metal, attached to an electronic device to transmit and dissipate heat that might damage internal circuitry.
    luminance
Luminous flux emitted from a surface per unit solid angle per unit of area, projected onto a plane normal to the direction of propagation. Also known as brightness and luminous sterance.
    photonic crystals
Photonic crystals are artificial structures or materials designed to manipulate and control the flow of light in a manner analogous to how semiconductors control the flow of electrons. Photonic crystals are often engineered to have periodic variations in their refractive index, leading to bandgaps that prevent certain wavelengths of light from propagating through the material. These bandgaps are similar in principle to electronic bandgaps in semiconductors. Here are some key points about...
