PhotoMachining Inc. of Pelham, N.H., a precision laser micromachining provider, has announced UV micromachining with excimer, frequency-tripled and frequency-quadrupled lasers. The advantages of UV lasers over conventional infrared sources include the ability to process parts using “cold” ablation, to achieve the smallest feature sizes and to precisely control material removal. The lasers have recently become available and are suitable for applications where small features are desired and the cleanliness of parts is essential.Read full article

    Glossary
    excimer
A contraction of "excited dimer." The term refers to an excited species made by combination of two identical atoms or molecules, one of which is excited and one of which is at a ground state.
    infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
    ultraviolet
That invisible region of the spectrum just beyond the violet end of the visible region. Wavelengths range from 1 to 400 nm.
