Corning Supplies LG with Gorilla Glass

CORNING, N.Y., March 17, 2010 – Corning Inc. announced that its Gorilla glass has been designed into the LG X300, a newly released mobile PC from LG Electronics of Seoul, South Korea. The aluminosilicate glass enables an edge-to-edge cover design and allows the LG X300, which measures just 17.5 mm thick and weighs ~2 lb, to remain thin, lightweight and portable.

The company said that the Gorilla glass, with thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mm, is an environmentally friendly protective window used in high-end display devices, including cellular phones, laptop and tablet computers, and mobile devices.

It is produced with a proprietary fusion-draw process that enables the production of uniform thin sheets with a pristine surface. The glass is adaptable to scalable sheet sizes for optimal throughput. During finishing, it undergoes a chemical strengthening process that gives it the properties to make it suitable for use as a scratch-resistant LCD cover.

Glossary
glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
