PROVIDENCE, R.I., May 6, 2010 — A line of high-purity feed material alumina polishing abrasives for aggressive lapping and uniform polishing has been released by Meller Optics Inc.

The calcined optics come in two grades: Microlux-R featuring large agglomerated particles that break down under pressure for aggressive grinding and lapping, and Microlux-RZ which is de-agglomerated with controlled particle sizes for fine grinding and uniform polishing. Supplied in seven particle sizes from 0.05 to 3.0 µm, these powders produce surface finishes to 10-5 scratch dig. The Microlux-R regular grade alumina is used by optical technicians and metallurgists and is suitable for use in filler, filter and metal separation applications.

The Microlux-RZ has a highly controlled particle distribution produced by a proprietary separation process that delivers particles that retain their fine dispersion over years of shelf life, while maintaining its high purity and the unique characteristics of each platelet. Originally created for ceramic applications, it also is used as a fine-grinding and polishing medium in conjunction with large micron grinding media. It is suitable for ultrafine polishing of semisoft crystalline and composite materials, and as a filler for magnetic media, plastics, binders, strengthening composite materials, armor and ultrapure ceramic applications where packing density is critical.

Suitable for grinding, lapping and polishing a wide range of hard and soft optical substrates, Meller Microlux-R is 99.98% pure and Microlux-RZ is 99.99% pure, and both are completely water-soluble and nontoxic. Applications include barium- or calcium fluoride, germanium, silicon, stainless steel, zinc selenide and zinc sulfide. Microlux Alumina is packaged in 5-lb plastic bags placed in protective cardboard containers.
