Jul 2010
ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 22, 2010 — IMRA America Inc. has announced its celebration of 20 years as a research and development company in the field of fiber lasers.

Founded in 1990 by automotive supplier Aisin Group of Japan, its main goal is to develop technologies that benefit industry and society as a whole. With access to the University of Michigan as a source for research employees, it is poised to serve the evolving US auto industry.

Its scientists have developed more than 150 patented inventions over the past two decades, making it a leader in the advancement of ultrafast fiber laser technology, according to the company.

Besides the automobile industry, its ultrafast technologies are used for lasik surgery and micromachining.

fiber laser
A laser in which the lasing medium is an optical fiber doped with low levels of rare-earth halides to make it capable of amplifying light. Output is tunable over a broad range and can be broadband. Laser diodes can be used for pumping because of the fiber laser's low threshold power, eliminating the need for cooling.
