Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., announced that it has shipped more than 1000 of its Paladin series quasi-CW, high-power ultraviolet lasers. Available with a choice of 2, 4, 8, 10 or 16 W of output power at a wavelength of 355 nm, they are suitable for printed circuit board, semiconductor, solar cell and flat panel display applications. The company provides laser-based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets.

continuous wave
Continuous wave (CW) refers to a type of signal or transmission where the signal is constant and does not vary with time. quasi-cw laser
A laser that generates a succession of pulses at a high enough repetition rate to appear continuous. The pump source is switched on for short intervals, nominally equal to the lifetime of the population inversion of the gain medium, during the continuous operation of the laser. This results in a lower duty cycle which reduces heating and achieves higher output powers.
wavelength
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
