Sterilizing with Fluorescent Light

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28, 2010 — The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections is well-known, causing an estimated 19,000 deaths yearly in the US and $3 billion to $4 billion in health care costs. What is less well-known is that this increased infection and resistance rate has not been met with a simultaneous development of novel antimicrobial and antibiotic agents; in fact, only three classes of antibiotics have been developed since the 1950s. To address this need, scientists at the University of New Mexico are working on a new type of antimicrobial surface that is inhospitable to...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
    polymer
Polymers are large molecules composed of repeating structural units called monomers. These monomers are chemically bonded together to form long chains or networks, creating a macromolecular structure. The process of linking monomers together is known as polymerization. Polymers can be classified into several categories based on their structure, properties, and mode of synthesis. Some common types of polymers include: Synthetic polymers: These are human-made polymers produced through...
