Luminus Devices Awarded 50th Patent for Big Chip LEDs
BILLERICA, Mass., Nov. 15, 2010 — High performance solid-state light source manufacturer Luminus Devices, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded the company its 50th patent.
In addition, it has also been granted 13 non-US issued patents in China, Korea and Taiwan that extend big-chip LED protection into those countries.
Luminus pioneered big-chip LED technology, and has aggressively filed intellectual property for protection of big chip LED devices, packages and systems.
“We are pleased that we continue to be granted patents covering big-chip LED technology and the rapid allowance of our patents is a testament to the novelty of our approach in the solid-state lighting industry,” said Alexei Erchak, founder and CTO of Luminus. “We have more than 100 additional patents pending in the US and in other countries that further extend our coverage.”
The company not only files for new patents, but has granted many licenses to other LED companies, including Forepi, Epistar and Nichia.
“It is our belief that the innovative technologies developed at Luminus can help advance the entire solid-state industry at a more rapid pace,” said Erchak. “We therefore welcome licensing opportunities that complement our core manufacturing business while simultaneously helping other LED companies benefit from our technology.”
The company’s ‘big-chip’ PhlatLight LEDs are used in display applications by companies such as Acer, Guth, LG, Philips Lighting and Samsung. They enable new general illumination applications in lighting markets, including architectural, entertainment, retail, residential, roadways, industrial high-bay lighting, digital displays, and signage and UV for industrial processing.
