QD Vision, LG Display to Develop QLED-Based Displays

WATERTOWN, Mass., Dec. 2, 2010 — QD Vision Inc. and LG Display Co. Ltd. (LGD) of Seoul, South Korea, have announced a joint agreement to develop highly efficient, high-performance active-matrix displays based on electroluminescent quantum dot LED (QLED) nanotechnology. The displays are expected to require much less energy than current products, while producing brighter, richer colors. The new products will use patterned thin films of QD Vision quantum dots to create a direct-view, active-matrix display. The technology also is expected to lower display manufacturing costs by simplifying the creative process. ...Read full article

    Glossary
    nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
    quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
