Laser-based Processes Simulated by Computer Cluster

AACHEN, Germany, Jan. 6, 2011 — Fraunhofer ILT has built a high-performance computer cluster at the Center for Nanophotonics to simulate laser-based production processes. These processes cover a wide span of time and length scales, especially in new techniques from micro- and nanophotonics. This requires special algorithms which have already been used successfully at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, as well as a massive amount of computer power. kerf
The material lost during a laser cutting or machining operation.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
