E-beams get a new twist

A new method to expand the capabilities of conventional transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) has been discovered by researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Passing electrons through a nanometer-scale grating imparted the resulting electron waves with so much orbital momentum that they were able to maintain a corkscrew shape in free space, the scientists found.     nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    nanometer
    A unit of length in the metric system equal to 10-9 meters. It formerly was called a millimicron.
    transmission electron microscope
    A type of microscope that uses magnetic lenses to transmit a beam of electrons through an object; the electrons are then focused on a fluorescent screen to form an enlarged image.
