Nanoscale Waveguide Created for Future Photonics

BERKELEY, Calif., June 1, 2011 — The first true nanoscale waveguides for next-generation on-chip optical communication systems have been demonstrated by researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The new quasiparticle, called the "hybrid plasmon polariton," may throw open the doors to integrated photonic circuits and optical computing for the 21st century. "We have directly demonstrated the nanoscale waveguiding of light at visible and near-infrared frequencies in a metal-insulator-semiconductor device featuring low loss and broadband operation," said Xiang Zhang, who led the research. "The novel mode...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    polariton
A polariton is a quasiparticle resulting from the strong coupling between photons (light particles) and certain types of excitations in a material, such as electronic excitations (electrons and holes) or vibrational excitations (phonons). The interaction between light and matter in a medium gives rise to a new hybrid state known as a polariton, which exhibits properties that are distinct from those of the individual photons and excitations. There are different types of polaritons based on the...
