Solar sheet sucks up sunlight

Compiled by Photonics Spectra staff

A flexible solar sheet that captures more than 90 percent of available light is slated to hit the consumer market within the next five years. Generating energy using traditional photovoltaic (PV) methods of solar collection is inefficient and neglects much of the available solar electromagnetic spectrum, said Patrick Pinhero, an associate professor in the University of Missouri chemical engineering department. The device his team developed – essentially a thin, moldable sheet of small antennas called nantenna – can harvest the heat from industrial processes and convert it...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    near-infrared
The shortest wavelengths of the infrared region, nominally 0.75 to 3 µm.
