4 Companies Partner to Standardize 3-D Glasses

NEW YORK, Aug. 17, 2011 — Three of the top 3-D display manufacturers have announced their intent to collaborate on a standardized type of 3-D glasses to facilitate cross display compatibility.

Panasonic Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sony Corp. have paired with XPAND 3-D to market consumer 3-D active glasses under the name “Full HD 3-D Glasses Initiative.”

The companies intend to develop and license the radio frequency (RF) system technology, including RF system protocols between consumer 3-D active glasses and 3-D displays such as TVs, personal computers, 3-D theaters and projectors, with XPAND active shutter glasses.

The standardization also will include multiple types of infrared system protocols between the glasses and displays, ranging from the protocols jointly developed by Panasonic and XPAND 3-D to the proprietary protocols of Samsung and Sony, respectively.

The license of today’s newly announced initiative is targeted to be released in September 2011, at which time the development of new standardization-applied active 3-D glasses will begin. Universal glasses with the new IR/RF protocols will be made available in 2012 and are targeted to be backward-compatible with 2011 active 3-D TVs.
