Nanowires to Enable Photonic Chip Creation

SWINBURNE, Australia, Oct. 5, 2011 — Using an optimized laser nanofabrication technique, researchers have engineered one of the smallest nanowires made from the optical material chalcogenide glass. The nanowires could lead to the creation of a photonic chip — considered by many to be the holy grail of optics. The investigators, from Swinburne University of Technology and the Australian National University (ANU), have fabricated nanowires with a diameter of 68 nm — about 1000 times thinner than a human hair — out of the chalcogenide glass, something never done before at this scale. They believe that this...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
