Dr. Jürgen Stuhler, director of scientific sales at Toptica, presented the Senior Award to Shlyapnikov and the Junior Award to Spielman. The two awards honor “outstanding research in experimental and/or theoretical physics of quantum degenerate atomic gases.”

Shlyapnikov received his award for his contributions to the development of the many-body theory of trapped quantum gases of bosonic and fermionic atoms and molecules. He is the director of research at the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modèles Statistiques and a part-time professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Spielman was honored for his work on the first experimental realization of synthetic magnetic fields and spin-orbit couplings in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. He is a researcher at National Institute of Standards and Technology and a fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute.

Toptica develops, manufactures, services and distributes diode and fiber lasers and laser systems for scientific and industrial applications.
