Advanced materials company Materion Corp. of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, has acquired China-based optical thin-film filter maker EIS Optics Ltd. for $24 million in cash. Materion said the deal gives it a manufacturing base from which to better serve its rapidly growing Asian optical coatings businesses. Materion made the acquisition through its wholly owned subsidiary, Materion Advanced Materials Technologies and Services Inc. EIS Optics makes glass processing, lithography and optical subassemblies for the management of light in applications including medical instruments. Materion said the...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    optical coatings
Optical coatings are thin layers of materials applied to optical components, such as lenses, mirrors, filters, and prisms, to modify their reflective and transmissive properties. These coatings are designed to enhance the performance of optical systems by controlling the way light interacts with the surfaces of the components. The primary purposes of optical coatings include: Antireflection coating: This type of coating is designed to reduce reflections from the surfaces of optical...
    optical filter
An optical filter is a device that selectively transmits or blocks specific wavelengths, or colors, of light. Optical filters are used to control the spectral content of light in various applications, allowing certain wavelengths to pass through while attenuating or blocking others. They play a crucial role in scientific, industrial, and consumer optical systems, influencing aspects such as color rendering, image quality, and spectral analysis. Key features and principles of optical filters...
    thin film
A thin layer of a substance deposited on an insulating base in a vacuum by a microelectronic process. Thin films are most commonly used for antireflection, achromatic beamsplitters, color filters, narrow passband filters, semitransparent mirrors, heat control filters, high reflectivity mirrors, polarizers and reflection filters.
