OSA Establishes Feld Biophotonics Award

WASHINGTON, April 11, 2012 — To honor professor Michael Feld’s fundamental contributions in the fields of laser science and applied physics for solving biomedical problems, The Optical Society (OSA) and the OSA Foundation (OSAF) have established the Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award. OSAF has begun fundraising efforts to endow the award permanently. The Feld Award, to be given annually beginning in 2013, will recognize individuals for innovative and influential contributions to the field of biophotonics, regardless of their career stage. The award encompasses all areas of biophotonics, ranging from...Read full article

    raman spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
