In the future, even the smallest traces of salmonella and other foodborne pathogens may be easily detected using a technology known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering, or SERS. Agricultural scientist Bosoon Park of the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service’s Quality and Safety Assessment Research Unit is leading exploratory studies of this analytical technique’s potential for quick, easy and reliable detection of harmful bacteria in food. Bosoon Park (right) and Jaya Sundaram examine a hyperspectral microscope image of an experimental...Read full article

    hyperspectral imaging
Hyperspectral imaging is an advanced imaging technique that captures and processes information from across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike traditional imaging systems that record only a few spectral bands (such as red, green, and blue in visible light), hyperspectral imaging collects data in numerous contiguous bands, covering a wide range of wavelengths. This extended spectral coverage enables detailed analysis and characterization of materials based on their spectral signatures. Key...

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    surface-enhanced raman scattering
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique that enhances the Raman scattering signal of molecules adsorbed on or near certain nanostructured surfaces. Raman scattering is a process in which light interacts with molecular vibrations, providing a fingerprint-like spectrum that can be used to identify and characterize chemical compounds. SERS significantly amplifies the Raman signal, making it more sensitive and allowing for the detection of molecules at very low...
