Focal Point, piezosystem jena Partner on Autofocus Systems

BOISE, Idaho, and HOPEDALE, Mass., June 11, 2012 — Focal Point Inc. and piezosystem jena Inc. have entered into a partnership to deliver turnkey autofocus systems for high-speed metrology and biological imaging applications. The effects of thermal drift on systems are becoming increasingly important since the advent of superresolution microscopes and the introduction of complex imaging techniques for biology. Direct-write optical processing is an expanding field that is making inroads into more traditional photolithography methods. Both applications require nanometer-scale stability between sample and lens. “We fill a need...Read full article

    Glossary
    autofocus system
A means of adjusting the sharpness of an image automatically, with a sensor for estimating distance or contrast and a drive mechanism to adjust the lens. Active systems generate a light source to which the sensor responds; passive systems rely on ambient illumination.
    focal point
That point on the optical axis of a lens, to which an incident bundle of parallel light rays will converge.
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    superresolution
Superresolution refers to the enhancement or improvement of the spatial resolution beyond the conventional limits imposed by the diffraction of light. In the context of imaging, it is a set of techniques and algorithms that aim to achieve higher resolution images than what is traditionally possible using standard imaging systems. In conventional optical microscopy, the resolution is limited by the diffraction of light, a phenomenon described by Ernst Abbe's diffraction limit. This limit sets a...
