OULU, Finland, Oct. 22, 2012 — SPECIM Spectral Imaging Ltd. has released AisaFENIX, a robust and compact spectral imager for field and airborne installations.

It captures high-quality hyperspectral data over the visible and near-infrared (VNIR), NIR and short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths in a single continuous image. For every pixel, the user can measure a perfect spectrum from 380 to 2500 nm with up to 620 spectral bands, whatever the targets and the distances to the targets are.

The imager is used in environmental, defense and law enforcement applications. It images through single front optics and a single input slit, keeping all wavebands spatially co-registered independently of the distance to the target.

It employs a patent-pending “single optics dual channel” imaging spectrograph, which, in spite of the single input slit, has two diffraction gratings: one optimized for the VNIR and the second for the SWIR region. Two focal plane arrays (FPAs), a state-of-the-art CMOS and a cryogenically cooled mercury cadmium telluride maximize sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. With two FPAs, different exposure times can be applied in the VNIR and SWIR regions to adapt to various spectral illumination conditions.

Applications include detection of camouflaged targets and improvised explosive devices from ground vehicles and various airborne platforms, including turrets and unmanned aerial vehicles; detection of narcotic plants; detection of invasive species and infected plants and trees; vegetation research and environmental monitoring; mineral mapping on drill cores and other geological samples; and full object extraction of light-detection-and-ranging point clouds.
