SOUTHAMPTON, England, Feb. 27, 2013 — SPI Lasers is launching a new continuous-wave low-mode laser for thin-material spot welding.

The 200-W laser is suitable for use when it is preferred that the weld not be visible from the back. The energy is evenly spread over a wider area to remove the high-intensity peak inherent in single-mode beams.

The beam is tailored with the right degree of intensity and mode stability, delivering the best profile to avoid cratering or breakthroughs in the spot weld. With continuous-wave or modulated (up to 100 kHz) capability creating sub-10-μs pulses, and power output variation of <1%, the laser provides a microwelding solution for applications including smartphones, battery contacts, medical devices and fine connectors.
