Biolase patents ophthalmic tech
The US Patent and Trademark Office has issued dental laser manufacturer Biolase Inc. of Irvine, Calif., a patent covering the use of its laser tunneling technologies for treating eye conditions, expanding the application of previous ophthalmic patents granted to Biolase. It includes the architecture and techniques for treating ocular and related tissue sites using laser energy in conjunction with a measuring device capable of determining anatomical structure thickness. Treatment methods covered under the patent include those for the eye conditions presbyopia, glaucoma, retinal disorders and cataracts.
- A vision defect commonly referred to as farsightedness. Results when the image of a distant object is focused beyond the retina by the relaxed eye. The condition can be corrected by introducing a positive lens in front of the eye.
- A state in which the human eye has very little or no power of accommodation. A common and normal condition in the eyes of those age 50 and older.
